Title: 58 heads
Post by: 31modelo on February 14, 2012, 11:56:04 AM
looking for a pair of 58 heads. I have a couple of nice sets of 390's or cash if you'd like. Thanks

1958 through 1963 heads are the same.

Is that $79.50, the cost of the head at the time of your printing? How old is that book?  :confused2:

Says something for inflation, right?

I'll bet that's a typo in the parts book.  :read:
Maybe trough '62? :scratchhead:

I'd think '63 with the larger radius on the corners would be a different casting and so the '58 covers wouldn't match.

Good Luck

Almost 10 years later, the 1975 Master Parts Book is showing the same 1958-63 listing.   :scratchhead:

It was the block that was greatly changed in '63. Plus the aluminum front cover and the front mounted distributor. In my perusal of the parts book I have found many components that are the same between the '62 and '63 390's.

Maybe they threw in a free '63 cover with any '58-'62 cylinder-head purchase?  :chin:
Or maybe a '58-62 cover with any '63 head purchase?
Or possibly that was a service casting that was modified to accept both early and late covers?  :scratchhead:

But  I don't see how a '63-up cover would mate to an OE  '62-down head.

What does '62 parts book say about '58 - '62 heads? :read:
The '58-'63 head  seems like a big jump in sequential numbering.

Good Luck

I have some 63 heads, and those timing covers are for 63 & 64 only.  If you want the valve covers to, we can talk.

The timing covers don't extend to '67?

AFAIK those covers were for the 390 style heads. The 429's were different.

Looking for 58 heads due to a smaller combustion chamber than the later 390 (59-63). Still looking

Is there a specific casting number?

A friend has several heads I could check for you.

Well... those are the same casting numbers as CF's '58-'63 part numbers in reply #7.  :scratchhead:  :read:

But... I still say that '63 heads can't be in the same club as '58-'62.

Pyro's on now. Maybe we'll hear from him soon.

My factory parts manual shows 63 heads will work. I offered.

Ueagh but Pyro, you know a '63 head and its radiused corners when you see it... how could that same cover possibly swap with '62-down head and its rectangle shape?

In this case, part # different than casting number.

Found another decent listing online in a book called Ultimate American V8 Engine Data Book

That settles the cover-fit issue.
Now we need a gander at the chambers.  :chin:

I'd think that 31modelo's looking for a smaller chamber.  :chin:

The books clump them together, but 59-62 had a 76 cc and 58's had a 72.83 cc. I have 6 sets of 390's and 2 sets of 55 331's. I'm just seeing if I can find a set for this engine that I'm building.

Shaving .005-.010 off of the heads and the deck will give you what you are looking for. Plus give you an assure good mating surface for the gasket./

Are we talking about 2 different animals here?  Im talking heads, and your talking valve covers.   I'm feeling fiesty, as I just told my financial guy to go removed himself, and cancel all my accounts.

BTW, I've been drinking, so who wants some?? :bang: :bang:
