Bring a weedeater and a wire brush.
Sitting outside in St Louis?
Hmmmm ..... lots of pretty snow melting in the bed year after year.
At least Geoff has the retired body man to help with a new roof.
The buyer will need those skills for that crusty roof.

Yeah,  I'd say the price is a little high for what's left of that car.

I've found a few of them in the last few days.

And I'd also say it's a lot high. But there's an ass for every seat.

Damn shame ain't it.  I imagine someone will save it, but it won't be me.  My Caribou was my last project, I'm just going to enjoy and maintain them now.  And don't someone come sneaking around my house with a little 365 Cadillac powered Ford roadster either --- Jan has a gun and knows how to use it.   ;D

I guess I'd better tell my buddy with the T-Bucket that has a 390 in it that you have interest.   ::)

That looks pretty nice.  Was it factory or did somebody make it at home?
I didn't have time to read the article at work............... :confused2:

;D  EZ, that is a Lincoln Caribou.  Made by the same company (Caribou Motors) that made my Cadillac Caribou.  I have seen one other Lincoln pickup but that is the first Caribou Lincoln that I have seen.  Neat.  If I had the money it would be cool to have one of each.

Gary, thanks for posting that.

Is that what they look like at the start of their hibernation in a field?

Also I can't get used to that odd oval rear window. Is that supposed to replicate the oval opera windows of the standard car? Or is it foreshadowing of that odd ovoid Taurus.

I'm wondering if they beefed up the rear suspension???  If not, you certainly couldn't carry much in the bed
of that car...........er, truck.

EZ, my answer to  your question at the MCLC site. ---

Just a car with a pickup bed.  Cadillac or Lincoln had nothing to do with the building of these cars, if you wanted one you bought a new Coupe deVille from Cadillac (or Continental from Ford) and had it shipped to Caribou Motors in California, they did all of the conversion work.
Mine does have air shocks (that I had to replace) but I don't know if Caribou Motors put them in or if they came later, my guess is they were put in later.  They were meant for gentleman farmers and probably most never hauled any heavy loads other than golf clubs or a couple bales of hay.  Evel Knievel owned a couple of Caribous at different times (and maybe a Mirage also) that he hauled his Harley around in.  From the pictures I have seen it definitely had beefed up tailgate hinges and mountings.

I would have added a leaf or two to the rear suspensions or added the air bag helper springs to carry the load.
I mean you KNOW people are going to put stuff back there.................

The air shocks seem to do well so far.  I have already had my spare TH-400 tranny in the bed of mine.

After the first of the year the Caribou is going in for a Class III trailer hitch.  I am hoping to take both Big Red and the Caribou to the Cadillac Grand National in Boston, Big Red will be on my trailer (for the first time since his completion).  I figure it will be cheaper to tow one and suffer the poor(er) gas mileage than to drive 2 cars up there.  Plus the fact that Jan has no desire to drive ANY car from Florida to upstate New York which will be our base and from where both cars will then be driven to Boston (about a 3 hour ride).

Do you think The caribou's brakes are going to be able to handle Big Red?
Title: Re: Here's another for you Geoff.
Post by: Fins on December 29, 2012, 01:55:43 PM
Why wouldn't they? They are a disc/drum set up. And driving nice, I wouldn't foresee a problem there.

I almost wonder if BR would do a better job towing the Caribou.  :chin: Though the O/D trans might play hell shifting back and forth.

The trailer should have brakes with that weight. Set up properly they can really haul the combination down.

BTW, what rear gear does the Caribou have? The stock 2.94:1?

I don't know the car weights,  but I suspect BR has a few pounds on the caribou.
I was just wondering about cooling of the brakes for such a heavy load.  Does the trailer have electric brakes?

I guess we'll find out when Geoff wakes up. He was probably out late at Capt. Hiram's last night.   :Muttley:

Another alternative

Yes, my trailer has electric brakes, and they do work well.  I have trailered Big Red before he was finished with that trailer behind the '72 Chevy pickup I used to have with a 350 engine.  The Chevy had a 700R4 that I put in it with a "push-on, push-off" button mounted on the directional signal lever to deactivate the locking converter.  The little I trailered Big Red around I usually had to leave the locking converter turned off but the Chevy pulled it well and stopped well other than that.

The Caribou's rear is the stock ratio.

As far as the weights are concerned, the title for Big Red says 4107 pounds but I have had it weighed and it now comes in at 4020, probably because the radiator, engine, trans, rear end combination is lighter than what came out of it.  The Coupe deVille that the Caribou is based on has a factory weight of 4877 according to the shop manual but I imagine it too weighs less after losing much of its steel roof, trunk lid, and upper rear body to fiberglass in the conversion.  Would be interesting to have it weighed now which I will do one of these days.

;D  Haven't been to Capt. Hiram's for a while, tonight we're going to the Lobster Shanty with a couple that live out here near us.  We'll be taking Big Red if the weather clears in time.

Neat Corvette, Gary.

Wow,  I figured BR would be much heavier than that.

When I was towing Chester behind my dakota (~4600lbs) I didn't have the module required to allow me to use the electric brakes on the trailer. I was braking down a very steep curving hill and I could feel that the trailer was pushing my back end out a bit which was making me nervous. I'll definitely buy an electric brake controller if I ever need to tow anything that heavy again.

I was thinking that the final drive on the Caribou may be a bit tall for the weight of Big Red and the trailer combination. But it should still pull it all OK in most conditions. But you may want to consider putting on a good trans cooler.

The pickup would have had a much shorter rear so pulling it would have worked better.

When I pulled my 27' travel trailer with my '70 Fleetwood, it was quite an exercise. First, the rear gear was far too tall, keeping the transmission form doing what it was supposed to do. I had to shift manually to keep engine RPMs in the fat part of the torque curve when accelerating without holding my foot to the floor. I found that the ideal speed was about 60 MPH and no more. If I tried more, fuel economy would just tank.

Mind you, I was pushing a fair bit of air with that trailer too. That should not be so much of a problem with Big Red.

Mike

Funny you should mention that, I just finished installing a good size tranny cooler last week.

Pic. #1 --- Starting out, I have 2 mounting brackets clamped to the upper mounts of the cooler.
Pic. #2 --- Finished, not easy to see now that it is painted black.  I made the brackets to fit the upper and mid grille mounting bolts, it made for a solid and clean installation.

There will definitely be some test runs made with Big Red up before heading out for a trip like I am considering.

Now that is a cooler.  :yikes:

I hope it doesn't block air to the condenser too bad. That is the problem I had. The tranny cooler was so big that it blocked cooling air to the A/C condenser and sent the head pressures up to +350psi on the high side.

With the direct drive 7 blade fan and the shroud on there, I've been good. But I have also run the trans fluid through the radiator cooler like the factory did. Now it stays a bit warmer then coolant temps. And by a bit, I mean maybe 15-20 degrees.

That's a big cooler alright. It will keep that trans nice and cool.

I installed an oil cooler off a CASCAR racer on the '70. It noticeably kept the trans cooler, to the touch. If I had one of those infrared sensors, I could have gauged exactly how much.
