Too bad it's not a '68...

I wonder though, with <70k miles, what's up with the engine?

The engine does need some work and a possibly rebuild or overhaul.

Ueah!   '68 is a much better car.  Of course, that's just my opinion.

Enjoy life - it has an expiration date.

Well the 472 is why I'd prefer a '68.
Oh, and the ease of a 500 swap.

A reason that I also prefer the '68.

67 is a better car cause no expense was spared.Yes the 429 had its issues but
the 3:21 final drive with the switch pitch trans, nothing like it.Just the 2 bottom bolts
on the bellhouse needed drilling was all it took to shoehorn the 500 in.My first
car was a 67 and all the rest I have had over the years have been 68's,now
I am back in a 67.Most would say 69 is better cause the simple brakes to 78.

They both have their better points. Some aspecrs were cheapened a bit for '68. But the switch Pitch in the '67 is certainly one of the better things. That trans in a '68 would have been awesome. Especially with the huge torque output of the 472.

I'd love to have a switch pitch in my '70. It would really move out with that.

Ok, what's the Switch pitch?

There should be nothing wrong with the 429 with only 68,000 miles on it.  Mine had 65,000
miles on her when I tore it down.  The thing looked like brand new!!  ST Dog can tell ya, he saw
the pictures.  Everyone on the Cadillac Power forum told me they would even re-use the bearings.

I bet the guy selling it is a non-mechanic and hasn't a clue what's wrong.  Could be a dead battery
or needs a water pump.  Something most of us could change in our sleep.

A variable angle stator in the convertor. Bigger throttle applications will switch the pitch of the stator blades to a more aggressive angle for more torque multiplication. Then they will drop back to a less aggressive angle for regular cruising. The result is a very aggressive acceleration curve That makes the 429 seem to have even more power than it does. The 429, if I remember correctly, has 480 lb/ft of torque. The 472 has 525 and the 500 has 550. Imagine what these much greater torque outputs would do with a switch pitch.

If it was so great, why only one year application?  :screwy:

1) it was used for several years (I forget which now) across the GM lines.

2) '67 was the only years for it in the FWD Eldo, which was new for '67.
3) It was unnecessary with the 472, so they dropped the unneeded expense in '68.

Cadillac and Buick used it from 1964-67.

And yes, since the 472 had 55 lb/ft torque than the 429, it really wasn't necessary, but it would have been really nice!
