In her defense, he's probably a spineless wimp, who bought the car as a penis extension. And she gave up on herself when she realized what an ass-hole she married.

You just don't know the whole story here. They could be dead broke, living on credit, and he goes out and buys a new car to boost his ego about not having a job.
